Galvanized Window Wells: Sizes, Specs, and What Contractors Need to Know
Below-grade windows need more than just a cleared opening. A properly sized galvanized window well keeps soil back, brings in light, and for egress windows gives occupants a safe exit path in an emergency. Ernest Maier stocks a full range of galvanized steel window wells in both standard area well and egress sizes, along with covers and access ladders. This page covers what is in stock, how the sizes work, and what code requires.
Standard Window Wells vs. Egress Window Wells
The two main categories of window wells serve different code purposes. Understanding the distinction helps you specify the right unit from the start.
Standard Area Wells: Standard wells are rounded or straight units installed around below-grade windows to allow light into basements and crawl spaces. They channel runoff away from the window opening and provide a measure of flood resistance. Projection depth on standard wells is typically shallower, ranging from 14 to 20 inches depending on the unit.
Egress Wells: Egress wells are larger units required by code where basement bedrooms or habitable spaces use a below-grade window as a required means of escape. The well must project at least 36 inches from the foundation wall to give a person enough room to climb out. Ernest Maier stocks egress-compliant wells at projections of 36 inches and deeper.

Ladders are available in 3-foot, 4-foot, and 5-foot lengths. Code requires a ladder or steps when well depth exceeds 44 inches. Order ladders with your well units to avoid a separate trip.

Egress Code Requirements for Window Wells
If you are installing a window well for an egress window, these are the key code thresholds from the 2021 IRC:
- Minimum net clear opening area: 5.7 square feet
- Minimum net clear opening height: 24 inches
- Minimum net clear opening width: 20 inches
- Minimum finished sill height above floor: not more than 44 inches
- Wells deeper than 44 inches require a ladder or steps
Local jurisdictions may adopt earlier or later code editions. Confirm minimum requirements with the AHJ before you order.
Installation Guidance
Galvanized steel window wells are set against the foundation wall before backfill. The unit should be anchored to the foundation to prevent movement during backfill compaction. Drain rock below the well unit at a depth of at least 6 inches helps prevent water pooling at the bottom of the well. Drain rock should connect to a drainage layer or weep hole where the well meets the foundation.
Cover installation: Polycarbonate covers are recommended for deeper wells to prevent debris accumulation and reduce flooding risk. Ernest Maier stocks covers in matching widths for the 37, 42, and 46-inch units. Other sizes are available by special order.

FAQ
Q: What is the difference between a standard window well and an egress window well?
A: Standard area wells allow light into below-grade windows and are shallower in projection. Egress wells project at least 36 inches from the foundation, giving occupants a large enough opening to escape through a basement window in an emergency. Egress wells must meet minimum area requirements under your local building code.
Q: Do all galvanized window well sizes come with covers?
A: Covers are available separately for purchase. Ernest Maier offers covers for widths of 37, 42, 46, 50, and 59 inches. Check with your branch for current cover availability.
Q: What depth of window well do I need for an egress window?
A: Depth depends on your window’s finished sill height below grade. The well must extend deep enough to expose the required egress opening area. The 2021 IRC requires a minimum net clear opening of 5.7 square feet for egress windows. Consult your local code or inspector for the exact requirement.
Q: Does Ernest Maier stock window well ladders?
A: Yes. Ladders are available in 3-foot, 4-foot, and 5-foot lengths. Codes generally require a ladder or steps when the well depth exceeds 44 inches.
Q: Are galvanized steel window wells corrosion resistant?
A: Hot-dip galvanizing provides a zinc coating that resists rust in typical soil and moisture conditions. In high-salt environments or areas with aggressive soil chemistry, additional protection or periodic inspection is recommended.
