How Big is a Pallet of Stone?

Mike Gregorio | June 12, 2021

Ordering stone by the pallet is common on residential and commercial jobs, but the numbers can be confusing if you have not done it before. A standard pallet of natural stone from Ernest Maier weighs approximately 1.5 tons (3,000 lbs) and covers roughly 25 to 30 cubic feet of material. This page covers what those numbers mean in practice, why pallet size varies, and how to convert them into a quantity for your project.

Standard Pallet: Weight and Coverage

One pallet of natural stone from Ernest Maier is approximately 1.5 tons, or 3,000 pounds. In terms of volume, expect one pallet to cover 25 to 30 cubic feet of material.

For wall construction, a useful field estimate: one pallet builds a wall approximately 12 inches high by 12 inches wide by 25 to 30 feet long. That baseline is practical for quick estimates on site, though actual results vary based on stone type, unit size, mortar joint thickness, and wall profile.

Why Pallet Size Varies

Not all pallets of stone are identical. Coverage depends on several factors that are worth understanding before you order.

Stone Type and Unit Size: Larger unit stones pack more efficiently on a pallet and can increase total coverage. Irregularly shaped fieldstone or rubble leaves more void space between pieces, reducing usable coverage per pallet. Dimensional or cut stone gives the most predictable yield; these products are typically sold by the square foot.

Wall Thickness and Profile: A 12-inch-thick freestanding wall uses more material per linear foot than an 8-inch retaining wall or a veneer application. Always calculate volume by your specific wall cross-section, then convert to pallets using the 25 to 30 cubic foot baseline.

Mortar Joints: For dry-stack applications, stone volume and wall volume will be the same. Mortared joints reduce net stone volume slightly because mortar fills some of the void space between units in the wall. Most residential mortar joint estimates subtract roughly 10 to 15 percent from raw stone volume.

How to Estimate How Many Pallets You Need

Start with your wall or surface dimensions. Use this straightforward method:

Step 1: Calculate total cubic feet. Multiply length (feet) by height (feet) by thickness (feet). For a wall that is 30 feet long, 4 feet high, and 1 foot thick, total cubic feet equals 120.

Step 2: Divide by 27.5. That is the midpoint of the 25 to 30 cubic foot range per pallet. For 120 cubic feet, the result is approximately 4.4 pallets.

Step 3: Round up and add waste. Always round to the next full pallet. Add 10 percent for a straight running bond wall and up to 15 percent for irregular stone or complex patterns. For the example above, order 5 pallets minimum, 6 pallets if the stone is irregular or the wall has intricate coursing.

Quick Reference by Application

Freestanding garden wall (1 ft thick, 3 ft high, 20 ft long): approximately 60 cubic feet, or 2 to 3 pallets.

Retaining wall (1 ft thick, 4 ft high, 40 ft long): approximately 160 cubic feet, or 6 to 7 pallets.

Stone veneer, single face (4 in. thick, 8 ft high, 30 ft wide): approximately 240 square feet, or 2 to 3 pallets.

These are planning estimates. Final quantities should be confirmed with your Ernest Maier rep before ordering, especially for cut stone or large commercial quantities.

Working With Your Ernest Maier Sales Rep

For large or complex projects, contact your nearest Ernest Maier location. Your sales rep can review your plans, discuss stone type availability, and help you build a quantity list that accounts for site conditions, delivery logistics, and lead times. Delivery scheduling should happen before your crew is ready to set stone.

FAQ

Q: How much does a pallet of stone weigh?

A: A standard pallet of natural stone from Ernest Maier weighs approximately 1.5 tons, or about 3,000 pounds.

Q: How much area does a pallet of stone cover?

A: One pallet covers roughly 25 to 30 cubic feet. For wall construction, that translates to a wall about 12 inches high, 12 inches wide, and 25 to 30 feet long.

Q: How many pallets of stone do I need for my project?

A: Calculate your total cubic feet needed (length x height x thickness), then divide by 27.5. Round up to account for waste and irregular stone fitting.

Q: Does stone type affect how much coverage I get per pallet?

A: Yes. Cut or dimensional (ashlar) stone gives the most predictable coverage. Irregular fieldstone (mosaic) or rubble has more void space, reducing usable material per pallet.

Q: Can Ernest Maier deliver stone pallets to my job site?

A: Yes. Contact your nearest Ernest Maier location to confirm delivery options, availability, and lead times for your specific stone type and quantity.
